During the late 60s – a new, altered wheelbase full bodied breed of race car developed that was labeled a “Funny Car” simply because it looked funny and different. Funny cars went on to become drag racing’s most popular class during the 70s and still remain just as popular. These supercharged nitromethane burning machines are extremely challenging to drive with their short wheelbase and 3000 horsepower engines! In fact – most times the front wheels don’t even touch the ground for the first half of the run. Traditional long smokey burnouts bring the crowd to their feet every time.
All funny cars competitng in Goodguys/VRA events must utilize body styles from the 1965 through 1979 era. Today’s nostalgia funny cars are equipped with all the modern day safety equipment while maintaining the nostalgic flavor and visual appeal of a 1970s racecar.Nostalgia funny cars are capable of elapsed times in the six-second range with speeds approaching 240mph.
