We have a winner! Paul Meadows from Shelbyville, Tennessee has won the Goodguys Ford Fiesta Giveaway Car! Paul’s name was randomly selected Friday, December 19th from a pool of over 300,000 entrants who entered the giveaway contest online and at our 2014 events. Paul entered to win at last May’s, Goodguys 9th Nashville Nationals.

Meadows is a big time auto enthusiast who prefers smaller cars so the hot hatchback is perfect for him! Being from Shelbyville, Tennessee he regularly attends the Goodguys Nashville Nationals. He’s also visited the Goodguys Indy Nationals over the years.

Paul’s new Ford Fiesta was tastefully modded to spec from a Bernal Autostyle concept. It was wrapped in matte silver, black and yellow vinyl by Pro Wraps. To get it down in the weeds, Goodguys used Ford Racing’s V-Spec suspension kit which includes Fords uniquely tuned race coilover mono tube struts with Eibach springs. Stainless steel brake lines were added for extra pedal feel. Tracy, California’s Dominator Street Rods made the stainless brake duct vents and custom radiator screen. Adding to the aesthetics was 3D Carbon’s six-piece Fiesta body styling kit which includes a rear wing, front splitter, side skirts, and rear lower diffuser.

The car rolls on Ford Racing’s smoked gray 15-spoke Fiesta wheel (17x7” with 49mm offset and 6-inch back spacing) wrapped in BF Goodrich G Force Sport Comp-2 tires measuring 205/40-ZR 17 on all four corners. Ford Racing’s cat back exhaust system featuring a 304 stainless steel muffler, and chromed tips was bolted on for a throaty, rich exhaust note. Rounding out the mods is Ford Racing’s nickel plated Fiesta short-throw shifter, good for a 30% shorter shift throw.

Congratulations Paul! Enjoy and drive the wheels off your new Ford!

The auction runs Saturday, January 10th through Sunday, January 18th at Westworld of Scottsdale – home to the Goodguys Spring Nationals and Southwest Nationals. From coast to coast and border to border the best AutoCross racers in the land threw down the gauntlet and chased the cones harder than ever before. Well over 1,000 competitors made run in the Goodguys AutoCross this season, solidifying what we’ve known for years – Goodguys AutoCross is growing fast and is more popular than ever.

Thanks to each and every one of the racers who came out, charged their hardest and gave the fans a show! Our hats are off to you!

We’re proud to introduce our 2014 Goodguys AutoCross Point Champions!

-Kyle Tucker - Detroit Speed Inc 1970 Camaro

-Kyle Tucker – Detroit Speed Inc 1970 Camaro

Overall Points Winner and Street Machine Class Winner
Detroit Speed Inc. co-founder Kyle Tucker was the overall season points winner as well as the Street Machine class winner in Goodguys AutoCross this year. Tucker ran 7 events in 2014, collecting top-five finishes along the way in each event including four runner-up efforts behind the wheel of the DSE 1970 Chevy Camaro Test Car.

He indicated 2014 saw the stiffest competition yet. “The Goodguys Autocross has become more competitive each year,” Tucker said. “With the amount of events across the country, there are so many really good cars and drivers it is a real honor to win the points championship. We’re continually working on our Test Cars, new product lines and even new Test Cars to bring to the competition in 2015,” he said.

Tucker’s ’70 Camaro is powered by an all-aluminum 6.3 liter L92 V8 engine. The car receives all of Detroit Speed Inc’s early prototype parts for testing and is always evolving. Also, it’s one of the best sounding cars out there!

-Rob MacGregor - No Limit Engineering 1969 Chevy C-10

-Rob MacGregor – No Limit Engineering 1969 Chevy C-10

Truck Class Winner:
Like he did in 2013, San Bernadino’s Rob MacGregor took home the season points championship in the Truck division making him the class’ only two-time champion. Flying his company’s “No Limit Engineering” livery, MacGregor ran 4 events this season finishing in the top five in all while landing in the runner-up spot twice.

A self-taught suspension guru and manufacturer, MacGregor has been building hot rods, trucks and suspension components for over 30 year under his No-Limit Engineering brand. His low-flying all red C-10 features his No-Limit “Wide Ride” IFS with a modified torque arm rear setup. The addition of Ridetech triple adjustable coilovers, Wilwood brakes, Intro “Wide 5” one-off wheels gave him the needed grip to claim his first Goodguys Championship crown. Under the hood lies a beastly LS3 V8 linked to a Tremec TKO 5-speed equipped with a Hurst Shifter.

-Todd Holdren - 1953 Buick

-Todd Holdren – 1953 Buick

-George Poteet's Speed Demon

-George Poteet’s Speed Demon

Hot Rodding journeyman and land speed racer George Poteet recently took the time to describe his harrowing 375mph crash at Bonneville on Sept 12th to Bill Hoddinott – contributing writer for Bonneville Racing News. The article appears in issue #178 which just came in the mail here to our offices!

In the In the weeks after the crash, a lot of misinformation was posted on the internet regarding the incident, so Poteet chose to tell the REAL story of how the Speed Demon streamliner crashed to Hoddinott and BNR. Since so many of you fellow Goodguys out there are friends with George and know of his land speed racing efforts (he’s been 439mph in the Speed Demon – the world’s fastest run by a piston-powered vehicle!), we thought’s we’d run an excerpt of the story as well as show you the video of the crash.

Poteet makes a bold statement in the interview that “NOBODY IS TO BLAME FOR THE CRASH BUT ME.” He then describes the actual crash in harrowing detail. Here’s what he had to say

“We fired up the car, everything normal, canopy closed and latched and at the starters signal the push truck eased up and bumped me, to push the car away in neutral. Get up just a little speed on the truck then apply a little throttle and slip the Librerty into 1st gear, and away we go. Right on up through the gears with the air shifter button and the course is flying past the car faster and faster.

Everything is normal as you can see on the cockpit video (below) until I get to 6 and SUDDENLY, the tail of the car kicks out to the right as if it was on ice! What has happened (as we figured out later), is that I came to a slippery part of the course and was too heavy on the throttle and the locked rear wheels spun up in an instant. This lost all tire grip on the course so the car could go in any direction. Why it chose the right we don’t know. Possibly a little gust of crosswind. But I’m on top of it, I’ve had a little of this fish-tailing before and it was harmless. So I corrected by steering into it instantly a little, like you do with a car skidding on ice. But instead of straightening out and continuing, the tail of the car swung hard left and went way out. My mind was following everything in slow motion and instantly realized the tail was too far out to recover! So I started to grab for the chute release to try to regain control but before I could, the car was going sideways at 375mph and A) the whole car jumped into the air and flew sideways for about 500 feet as we measured later and B) when the 375mph wind hit the canopy sideways it blew it clear off!”

The entire interview is riveting and worth a subscription to Bonneville Racing News by itself! But if you subscribe you’ll get the latest and what is happening in the world of land speed racing, including the coming issue in which Poteet revelas his plans for the 2015 season. -Be There at Beech Bend Raceway Park Sept 18-20 for the return of Goodguys!

-Be There at Beech Bend Raceway Park Sept 18-20 for the return of Goodguys!

We’re really, really, really excited to be returning to Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green September 18-20, 2015 for the Goodguys 4th Nostalgia Nationals! The historic track is the perfect fit for a fast paced weekend which will include a show & shine for all years, makes & models, vintage drag racing all three days and the high-speed Goodguys AutoCross on the Beech Bend oval track!

While digging through some archives, we stumbled upon this video from 2009 – the second year we held the Nostalgia Nationals at Beech Bend Raceway Park. While not much vintage drag racing footage is shown, the video, shot by Route 2 Media, does an outstanding job of capturing the sights and sounds of Beech Bend Raceway Park. It’s so good we wanted to share it with you and maybe get you excited for the return in September!

If you’d like to pre-register (and save some cash with early bird registration) or just check out the event details, click here! Enjoy the video!

-Hot Rod Hero and Motorsports Hall of Fame member Dale Armstrong

Memorial services for Dale Armstrong, who passed away November 28th, are scheduled for Thursday, February 5, at Fairplex in Pomona in conjunction with the NHRA Winternationals. The service will be conducted in the NHRA Top Eliminator Club tent at 6:00 p.m., following the day’s racing activity. The service was originally going to be at the NHRA Motorsports Museum, but it became evident that there would not be sufficient space to accommodate everyone. Courtesy admission and parking will be available after 5:00 p.m. for those wishing to attend the service.

Not only was Armstrong a legendary drag racer and crew chief, he was a huge car enthusiast and regular at the Del Mar Nationals where he was honored by Goodguys in 2009 as a Hot Rod Hero. His customized 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham was a huge hit with fans that year.

-Dave Schaub hot rodded this 50s-era hot rod vacuum cleaner for his longtime friend Andy Brizio

-Dave Schaub hot rodded this 50s-era vacuum cleaner as a Christmas gift for his longtime friend Andy Brizio

During the annual Bay Area Roadsters Christmas Party (held last weekend in Jackson, California), our friend Dave Schaub (who once drove his ’32 roadster through all 49 states in 7 days to benefit the Ronald McDonald House) made a fellow club member way happy!

Per club tradition, members draw names of fellow members out of a hat for the annual gift exchange. Schaub drew none other than the Rodfather himself Andy Brizio! And then he got busy.

Schaub built what has to be the coolest 50s-era vintage vacuum cleaner we’ve ever seen! Phil Whetstone did the paint and flames to match Andy’s flamed purple deuce hiboy roadster. It also features a hot dog hood ornament, VW pushrod tubes for the exhaust and a 1965 VW turn signal on the top!

Talk about the ultimate hot rod Christmas gift! Word has it that the Rodfather was nearly moved to tears and the whole party flipped out over just how cool this thing really is.

Well done Dave Schaub-Claus! You’re the man!

If this doesn’t speak to your inner gearhead…nothing will! Over the weekend, British motoring enthusiast and pre-war restoration guru Duncan Pittaway brought an absolute beast of a car back to life. He calls is the Beast of Turin.

After restoring this incredibly rare (one of two ever built) S.76 Fiat land speed car for the better part of four years, the giant four cylinder engine was started for the first time in over 105 years! As you can see from the video, it’s a flame-belching, thunderous monster and its simply glorious!

The engine is simply a behemoth – one of the largest motors we’ve ever seen. The huge four cylinder engine features four valves per cylinder, and includes a multi-spark, overhead cam configuration. It has a 7.5-inch bore x 9.843-inch stroke with a 1729 c.i.d. (28 liters) and it produces 300-h.p; each cylinder displaces 432 cubic inches! Say what?

Pittaway’s original plan was to have the car all buttoned up for last summer’s Goodwood Festival of Speed but a few snags prevented its debut there. But thanks to the World Wide Web, we now get to see and hear what the finished product looks like. It’s simply marvelous!

After the final online qualifier is pulled the week of December 1st, we will draw the overall winner mid-December and just like that – it will be given to its new owner! Make sure you enter online to win before December 1st for your chance at this cool car.

Here’s that online entry link again.

About the Car:
Working off a design concept by Bernal Autostyle, the Fiesta was tastefully modded to spec. The hot hatch was wrapped in matte silver, black and yellow vinyl by Pro Wraps.

As you can see by the pictures below, this hot hatch burns right through the screen! It sits perfect, looks killer, slices through the wind and handles like a slot car!

-Every square inch of Westworld was packed with hot rods and thousands of fans during the 17th Southwest Nationals

-Every square inch of Westworld was packed with hot rods and thousands of fans during the 17th Southwest Nationals

Last weekend’s 17th Southwest Nationals was an all-out happenin’, blending the Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the Year (two of which were decided at the event) with over 3,000 other mean machines sprawled throughout the massive Westworld of Scottsdale events complex. While the rest of the country was locked in a pre-Christmas chill, the green fields and warm sun at Westworld closed out the Goodguys 2014 event season in grand fashion.

The Top 12 Cars of the Year were a huge draw, displayed together in a row alongside their custom Snap-on toolboxes atop custom flooring from Racedeck. The site of the country’s heaviest hitters sitting door-handle to door-handle had tongues wagging all weekend long. If you want to see what’s going on in hot rodding, this exhibit encapsulates the current state of the hobby better than any other exhibit you’ll find. Call us biased, but that’s the simple truth!

While the Top 12 were doing their thing on the upper paddock, the west side of the property featured unleashed horsepower and the nation’s top 32 AutoCross racers vying to win the Goodguys AutoCross Finals Shootout presented by BF Goodrich, K&N Filters and Tremec, dubbed the Duel in the Desert. The winner would be named Goodguys AutoCrosser of the Year. When the screeching tires and thunderous V8 vibrato subsided late Saturday afternoon, there sat the king…Brian Hobaugh and his racy red 1965 Corvette.

While the weekend got off to a sizzling start with Thursday’s Over the Hill Gang Hot Rod Tour followed by a rip-roarin’ kickoff party at Squeeg’s Kustoms, the weekend peaked midday on Saturday when the 386-acre Westworld facility rocked and seethed with well over 3,000 cars. They came here from over 26 US states and Canadian provinces. It was mechanical mayhem to the max and it was a beautiful site!

A weekend like this restores our conviction that the hot rodding hobby is booming, seething and swelling. It was a perfect send off as rodders around the world head home and hunker down for winter. But it’s all good! Spring beckons! We’ll convene right back here at Westworld March 13-15 for the 6th Spring Nationals! See you then and may you have a warm and happy holiday season.

-Brian Hobaugh won the Goodguys 2014 Intro Wheels AutoCrosser of the Year by winning the Duel in the Desert with a 70.376

-Brian Hobaugh won the Goodguys 2014 Intro Wheels AutoCrosser of the Year by winning the Duel in the Desert with a 70.376

Nicknamed The Duel in the Desert – the Goodguys 2014 AutoCross Finals Shootout presented by BF Goodrich, K & N Filters and Tremec Transmissions featured a bigger field, better racing and a thrilling finish today at Westworld of Scottsdale.

Thirty-two of the country’s top AutoCross racers passed the start beams in an attempt to win the 2nd annual ‘Shootout and walk away with $3,000 in cash, a custom toolbox from Snap-on Tools and a stack of sponsor gift certificates. More than that, they would be named Goodguys AutoCrosser of the Year – the final berth in the Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the Year.

In a cut throat duel, last year’s top two finishers, champion Danny Popp and runner-up Brian Hobaugh reunited again this year for the trophy round even though the field was expanded by 8 cars. The cream indeed rose to the top.

This time it was Brian Hobaugh, a second generation AutoCross racer driving his dad’s wicked ’65 Corvette out of San Ramon, California that got to hoist the trophy and $3,000 winner’s check. But it almost didn’t happen. “I broke a half shaft in qualifying,” he said from the winner’s circle. “I couldn’t have made it to eliminations if all my friends and fellow competitors didn’t jump in and help like they did. We had it fixed in 10 minutes.”

Hobaugh was brilliant all day through each of the five elimination rounds. His slowest run of the day was a 71.067, his quickest a 69.843 which also stood for quickest run of the entire race. “The track was going away late which made it really difficult but all of us were in the same boat” he said. In the end it worked out. “I’d like to thank my father Steve. This is his car. Without him I couldn’t be here.”

As it turns out, Popp and Hobaugh have been facing off for years in events like today’s Duel in the Desert. Back in 1970s and 80s SCCA and NCCC AutoCross competition, the families of Ohio’s Herb Popp and California’s Steve Hobaugh lived thousands of miles apart but traveled similar paths. Both ran vintage Corvette’s, both were fast and both were always at the top of the field in Solo competition.  Between them, they won a bunch of division and regional titles. Always at their sides were their young sons Brian (Hobaugh) and Danny (Popp).

The cars (Hobaugh’s red ’65 ‘Vette and Popp’s blue ’72) were eventually mothballed as both families pursued newer AutoCross machinery and other interests. As the decades went by, those two young boys who grew up spending their weekends in cone-strewn parking lots honed their fathers’ bygone craft becoming AutoCross titans in their own right. As interest in vintage Muscle Cars and Pro-Touring machines heightened in the new millennium along with the emergence of the Goodguys AutoCross program, both Popp and Hobaugh remade their father’s machines into modern day menaces.

Today, team Hobaugh shined brightest in the decades old rivalry, earning Brian the title of Goodguys AutoCrosser of the Year.

Here are the top 4 in-the-money finishers and their winning times:

For the first time ever, Goodguys selected the 2014 LMC Truck of the Year-Late winner at the season-ending 17th Southwest Nationals at Westworld of Scottsdale. All seven finalist (chosen over the last 13 months) made the trek to Scottsdale, Arizona to put on a truck show to end all truck shows!

When the assembled pickups were looked over and the final votes were tallied, Gary Brown’s 1957 Chevy took home the big win, being named Truck of the Year.

Brown has devoted his life to all things automotive. A dyed in the wool car enthusiast who has been a collector, Chevrolet dealer, and even a professional NHRA drag racer, he knew who to turn to when he wanted his dream truck. That builder was Mike Goldman Customs of Meridian, Mississippi – builders of the 2013 Truck of the Year-Early. Brown’s finished product turned out flawless blending together elements of a classic truck, a Corvette, and plenty of modern performance. It sits right, looks right sounds right and drives right. Truly a modern masterpiece finished in smooth, deep black.

The truck’s body was altered with shaved drip rails, rounded corners, and custom belly pans. The bumpers were hand built and the tailgate and bed were heavily massaged. It rides on a modified Roadster Shop chassis with a DSE-pump assisted power rack & pinion, RS front suspension, and a chromed independent rear Kugel assembly. Six-piston Wilwood calipers and 14-inch discs were added behind the 20 and 22-inch Schott Velocity wheels, and the entire chassis was body worked slick and show painted. The redline tires are from Diamond Back Classics.

Power is an all-aluminum ZL1 454, number 39 of only 200 produced. It’s fed with an Imagine injection system and was ground smooth and satin finished by Jeff Smith. It’s backed with a Richmond five-speed.

The interior features a modified 1967 Corvette dash with Classic Instruments gauges that was stretched in the middle to fit the cab. The seats, shifter, and steering wheel are also from a ’67 Corvette. The truck was taken to Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop for the flawless red leather interior.

The completed package dazzled in its debut this spring, ultimately being selected as a Truck of the Year finalist at the Goodguys All American Nationals in Indianapolis. It was most deserving of the big win in Scottsdale.

Fellow finalists for Goodguys 2014 LMC Truck of the Year-Late included Scott Waksmacki (1955 Chevy), Dave Jones (1956 Ford F-100), Jack Nelson (1969 Ford), Calvin Andrews (1970 Chevy C-10), Accel Performance Group (1966 Chevy Suburban) and Eric Steinbrecher (1967 Chevy C-10).

-Goodguys Founder & Chairman Gary Meadors

-Goodguys Founder & Chairman Gary Meadors

Goodguys Rod & Custom Association Founder & Chairman Gary Meadors was honored as the recipient of the 2014 ISCA Legends of Hot Rodding award presented at the SEMA Show last week in Las Vegas. The award honors an individual who has continually created and exhibited amazing custom cars and hot rods at car shows across the country. This individual is highly regarded for his or her commitment to hot rodding and innovations that keep the industry growing.

A passionate hot rodder and promoter his entire adult life, Meadors put on his first organized street rod event in 1973 in Lodi, California attracting nearly a thousand cars. Under his direction, the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, founded in 1983, has gone on to promote and produce over 700 hot rod and custom car events in a 32 year span, still going strong today with 21 annual events and a full time staff of over 35 dedicated employees. In 1989, he worked closely with the NHRA to establish safety guidelines for nostalgia drag racing, then in 1994 formed America’s first and only point’s championship for vintage drag racers. In 2008, Goodguys began providing event participants with a professional Auto Cross track – a phenomenon which has become quite prominent in our industry today. As publisher, Goodguys has cranked out over 250 issues of their colorful monthly magazine the Goodtimes Gazette, bringing their brand of good times to subscribers and hot rod enthusiasts around the world.

Meadors career milestones are many including membership in the prestigious Bonneville 200mph Club, induction into the HRIA Hall of Fame as well as the HRIA “Lifetime Achievement” award for his contributions to hot rodding.

Now retired from the day-to-day tasks of Goodguys, he spends his days relaxing and enjoying his favorite past time – driving hot rods and customs, his wife of forty-seven years Marilyn and their dog “Whitewall” riding shotgun.

Incredible weather, patriotic spirit and thousands of candy colored hot rod & custom creations made the 25th annual Autumn Get-Together in Pleasanton a memorable and fun weekend for everyone! With temperatures tickling the 80-degree mark Saturday afternoon, conditions were simply perfect for the giant outdoor show & shine. It was a fitting way to close out our annual 4-event swing at the fairgrounds in Pleasanton.

Indoors, all three exhibit buildings were stuffed with specialty exhibits including a giant truck display inside the young California Building, a Lowrider display (courtesy of Deadend Magazine) in the Hall of Commerce and more vendors & specialty cars inside the dome-topped Exhibition Hall. Throw in the pin striper’s Brush Bash, model car show, and free games for the little rodder’s and you had a full-tilt weekend of fun.

For the last 15 years, it’s here at the Autumn Get-Together we pay tribute to our Veteran’s and active military men & women. On Saturday Veteran groups and military installations, American Legion representatives and more groups from around the San Francisco Bay Area joined us for a special ceremony and parade. Coined the “Vettes for Vets” the parade featured Former freedom fighters being escorted in corvette roadsters of all years. With enthusiastic, flag-waiving fans lining the parade route, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. “You can’t understand just how much this means to us,” one Vet whispered. Talk about being proud to be an American!

Out on the West side of the grounds, the Goodguys AutoCross and jam-packed swap meet attracted thousands of fans with nonstop buzz and excitement. Collecting Goodguys AutoCross wins over the weekend were Mary Pozzi (Pro), Mark Scroggs (Street Machine) and Terry Bland (Truck). Bangshift.com announcer Brian Lohnes made the trip out from Boston to call the frenetic action, offering his booming voice and accute insider knowledge! It was a great weekend of racing!

The Pleasanton Fairgrounds will light up again with the 33rd annual Goodguys All American Get-Together March 28 & 29, 2015. Click here for early-bird registration! We hope to see you there!

For the second consecutive year, the Goodguys GOLD awards were presented at SEMA in Las Vegas, offering a stunning group of hot rods, street machines and one completely tricked out truck. Just five vehicles were chosen from a field of over 1,000 show cars.

This year’s field was deep and contentious. Beginning on Saturday (two full days before the show would officially open to the public), Goodguys staff members began pouring over the entries spread out over 155 acres of exhibit space. With hundreds of fresh, never-seen-before cars & trucks the selection process was difficult but refreshing at the same time. So many hi-quality machines make their debut here in the desert. It’s a treat to see what the nation’s top builders have come up with.

The prize? A unique mantel piece patterned after a U.S. Mint gold bar. The GOLD awards carry a unique prestige in that they’re only presented here at SEMA. Can’t get one anywhere else!

The winners were announced Wednesday, November 5th at our booth on Hot Rod Alley. It was a party like no other, with literally hundreds gathered around to see who would win. The passion, excitement and all around buzz has never been at a higher level in our industry and we salute every single builder and owner who entered a car in this year’s show. It was truly a pleasure seeing your cars.

Here they are. The 2014 Goodguys GOLD winners:

Chris_McPhie_GOLD

Chris McPhie, 1966 Chevelle “Recoil”
Recoil, the latest creation from Mike and Jim Ring known worldwide as Ringbrothers, is a daring and bold statement in the Pro-Touring/Street Machine landscape. The 1966 Chevelle commissioned by newcomer Chris McPhie features a 980hp Whipple-charged LS7, an all-aluminum, all-business interior with five-point racing harness seats and Racepak gauge cluster as well as carbon fiber fenders, bumpers and trim pieces. It rides on a custom Roadster Shop chassis and one-off 5-spoke HRE Wheels. The color is “custom sand.” In addition to a GOLD award, it was chosen by General Motors as the Best Chevy at SEMA.

Craig_Moyes-GOLD

Craig Moyes, 1950 Chevrolet Suburban Phantom Fleetside
Designed and built by Kindig-It Design, Craig Moyes’ 1950 Chevy Suburban was a huge hit inside the Flowmaster booth. The red & white Suburban-turned-truck features a 1950 Chevy cab grafted to a Morrison chassis with a completely hand-rolled bed. It’s powered by a Magnuson-supercharged 550hp LS3 motor linked to a Tremec 6-speed. Inside the cab is tan leather with bonded leather inserts, custom dash and more. It rolls on Billet Specialties wheels.
Canepa-GOLD
Bruce Canepa, 1932 Ford Fordor
From Northern, California comes Bruce Canepa’s “All Ford Fordor” – a timeless deuce hot rod designed by Canepa with body and chassis by Moal Coachworks in Oakland, California. Stunning, yet sinister in all black, it’s powered by an Ed Pink Racing Engines-built 427 cubic inch Ford small block with Gurney-Westlake heads. A brown leather interior by Sid Chavers, kidney bean Real Wheels, yards of bright work by Sherm’s Plating and a healthy dose of louvers, it’s hands-down one of the top 5 hot rods built in the last 20 years. Truly a work of art with over 100 subtle body modifications.

Chuck_Rowe_GOLD

Chuck Rowe, 1937 Chevrolet Coupe
A fresh build from Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop, Chuck Rowe’s in-the-weeds 1937 Chevy coupe turned heads for its perfect Alloway stance. Upon a closer look however, something even more striking was revealed. Under the hood lies perhaps the rarest hot rod motor ever assembled. It’s an all-aluminum McLaren Chevy big block recovered from Peter Revson’s 1971 Championship-winning McLaren Can Am car! Other notable features include suicide doors, a Morrison chassis, Mike Long G-Force 6-speed transmission, one-off Alloway ET Wheels, red leather interior and Classic Instruments gauges.

Pete_Fejuloski_GOLD

Pete Fejuloski, 1968 Dodge Charger
From the Roadster Shop comes Pete Fejuloski’s “Sliced” – a 1968 Charger powered by a 1300hp twin turbo Viper V-10! Head designer Jeremy Gerber and his team worked overtime on the body blending together the custom hood, fenders and door panels for a classic “Coke bottle” wide-body street machine look. It rides on a RS Fast Track Chassis, deep concave wheels by Greening Auto Company and features a full roll cage. Other essentials include a carbon fiber belly pan, all aluminum interior, custom dash and steering wheel.

-Andy Leach

-Andy Leach

Las Vegas, NV – Cal Auto Creations’ Andy Leach was the recipient of the Goodguys Trendsetter Award, presented Wednesday, November 5 at the Hot Rod Industry Alliance awards banquet in Las Vegas. The award is presented annually during SEMA week to a rising talent in the rod and custom car building industry.

Leach’s talents were visible at an early age. He first picked up a welding torch as a curious grade school student and by the age of 14 had already taught himself to weld, build and fabricate cars, working out of his parent’s garage. He restored his first car, a 1937 Ford, back to new condition before he turned 16.

After college, Leach apprenticed at Rad Rides by Troy in Manteno, Illinois, using his fresh ideas and high level of fabrication skills to assist Troy Trepanier in building award-winning custom creations.

In 2009, he got an opportunity to step out on his own, laying the foundation for his own hot rod and custom car empire. In a startling rise straight to the top of the hot rod hobby, he and his team at Cal Auto Creations took home the 50th annual Ridler award in 2013 for a 1940 Ford coupe they built for Leach’s business partner Ron Cizek.  The blown Flathead-Ford-powered coupe, known as “Checkered Past,” went on to be named Goodguys’ Street Rod of the Year and was the signature car for the entire 2013 season. As a result, his shop is now full of innovative projects including post-war hot rods, ‘60s touring cars and ‘70s muscle.

Over the past decade, the industry has seen the emergence of a new generation of young coachbuilders that take the hobby to new heights with fresh takes on old classics, impeccable build quality and superior design. Andy Leach is at the forefront of the youth movement.

Past recipients of the Goodguys Trendsetter Award include Chip Foose, Troy Trepanier, Alan Johnson, Eric Peratt, Tim Strange, Dave Lane, Zane Cullen, Dean Livermore, Jesse Greening, Troy Ladd, J.F. Launier, Phil & Jeremy Gerber, Mike & Jim Ring, Dave Kindig and Jonathan Goolsby & Josh Henning.
