For the first time ever, the Hot Rodder’s of Tomorrow Engine Challenge, a timed engine-building competition for high school auto shop teams, visited a Goodguys event last weekend during the Goodguys 20th Summer Get-Together presented by Specialty Sales Classics at the Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.
The competition pitted two bay area high schools (Livermore R.O.P. and Santa Clara’s Wilcox High) against Southern California’s Calabasas High and Rancho Alamitos. Then on Sunday, Thomas County Central High School came in from Georgia to get practice reps in for the Hot Rodder’s of Tomorrow National Championships scheduled for December.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the Bay Area teams to get their feet wet and compete for the first time in the Engine Challenge. The competition mandates that all teams use only hand tools. The result is a symphonic balance of mechanical fury.
In the end, the kids from Georgia’s Thomas County Central won the competition with a top time of 22.58 seconds. In the battle of Northern and Southern California, it was Garden Grove’s Rancho Alamitos winning with a competition time of 36.38 seconds.
