The Goodguys 16th PPG Nationals held last weekend in Columbus, Ohio will be remembered for three huge days of record crowds, brilliant sunshine, spectacular show cars and full throttle AutoCross action. It might also be remembered for over 400 vendor exhibits, sky tram rides, shade trees, big award shows, and Friday Nite Vintage Drags. Whatever the case, it was big! And loud! And wayyyy fun!
A record-setting weekend crowd in excess of 100,000 packed the Ohio Expo Center located just a stone’s throw from the Ohio State University Campus. When the final vehicle tallies came in Sunday afternoon, the records showed over 6,200 cars had registered for the biggest event on the Goodguys schedule.
George Poteet’s “GPT Special” 1969 Ford Torino raced off with the Goodguys 2013 Optima Batteries Street Machine of the Year title while Ron Cizek’s “Checkered Past” ’40 Ford cleaned up yet again adding the Goodguys 2013 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year title to its repertoire.
The Columbus crowds embraced the country’s top rods, customs, muscle cars and truicked out trucks as if they were their own. Fans & admirers were thick as thieves in Saturday’s Builder’s Choice area, as well as Sunday’s sun-drenched Winner’s Circle.
Aesthetically, the event has never looked better. The Ohio Expo Center gets a lot of credit for colorful gardens, lush lawns and acres of smooth, clean pavement. It simply couldn’t have gone any better. The Goodguys showcase event was just that – a perfect window into an industry bursting with color, pride and a new generation of the most talented car builders the world has ever seen.
If you’ve never been here, put this one on your bucket list! Next year’s event will be held July 11, 12 & 13
