Charlotte, North Carolina’s Donald Knox had his dream come true. The 1970 Chevy Nova he’s so lovingly and obsessively restored to factory delivery condition (he went right past showroom quality) has won the Goodguys 2013 Hemming’s Muscle Car of the Year award. Knox’s black Nova was selected as a finalist at last fall’s Southeastern Nationals at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The black beauty was originally delivered to Jack Douglas Chevrolet (one of the country’s leading high performance dealers during the sixties and seventies) in late 1969. Donald purchased the car out of Arizona then restored it to “as delivered” condition complete with plastic wrap on the seats and steering wheel. The cool thing is despite its delivery-condition, Donald DROVE it out to last fall’s Southeastern Nationals!
Originally ordered as a base model, the Nova features a 350hp 396ci big block with 10:25:1 compression, a four barrel, a TH400 transmission, and a 3.73-geared 12-bolt with Positraction. The car also has the beefier F41 HD springs and shocks, and came equipped with power brakes and steering. Dog dish hubcaps adorn the correct 14-inch wheels with F70-14 Firestone redlines.
The stock bench seat interior was refurbished and made-new by George’s Trim Shop in Concord, NC using correct materials and features an additional accessory Sun Tach and 3-gauge panel under the dash. This car is simply immaculate – one of the best-showing Muscle Cars we’ve seen.
If you’re headed to the Goodguys 16th Southwest Nationals Nov 15-17 at Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona you’ll be able to see the car up close in the “Champion’s Arena” presented by Street Rod Headquarters.
