Last weekend’s Goodguys 16th Southwest Nationals at Westworld in Scottsdale was one of those 96-hour barn burners, that didn’t let up from sunup Thursday to sundown Sunday. A record car count (3,100 show cars) and huge crowds poured into Westworld from all over the place.
It seems EVERYONE comes to Scottsdale and who could blame them with perfect 70 degree days. You see license plates from Canada, Minnesota, Michigan, Texas and all points in between. The “Valley of the Sun” as some call it has become the unquestioned hotbed for car guys during the fall and winter months.
With the Goodguys Terrific 12 award winners proudly displayed alongside their custom Snap-on toolboxes, the enthusiastic crowds got a glimpse of the nation’s top cars and all major Goodguys award winners from the 2013 season.
Over on the extra-large Goodguys AutoCross course the nation’s top 24 AutoCross racers were battling for the first-ever Goodguys AutoCrosser of the Year title in the Goodguys Finals Shootout. When the brake dust settled, it was Cincinnati’s Danny Popp who won out, beating all 24 competitors behind the wheel of his family’s decades-old, but very fast 1972 Corvette.
Throw in the always festive Drew’s Garage kickoff party and Hot Rods by Dean’s TGIF party and you begin to sense just what a full weekend it was.
In its first 16 years, the Goodguys Southwest Nationals has firmly established itself as the can’t-miss fall event on any hot rodder’s calendar. On car count alone, it’s become one of the Goodguys top 5 events of the year.
We’ll come back to Westworld twice next season beginning with the Goodguys 5th Spring Nationals March 7-9, 2014 then finishing off our season with the Goodguys 17th Southwest Nationals November 14-16, 2014. Hope to see you then!
