MacGregor Marches to Goodguys AutoCross PRO Class Championship
San Bernadino’s Rob MacGregor went ALL IN to win the Goodguys 2013 PRO Class AutoCross Championship as well as the Truck Class. He was so fierce a competitor last season, he literally blew his lid at the season-ending Fall Del Mar Nationals. During the Del Mar competition, the hood of his purpose-built 1969 Chevy C-10 pickup blew backward, obstructing his view and damaging the truck’s cowl. The incident and resulting repairs (he returned trackside mere minutes after blowing his lid) signified his intensity and drive to be this year’s Goodguys PRO Class Champion.
In all, MacGregor ran a total of 11 Goodguys AutoCross events across the country this year. That’s something like 8,000 road miles logged in pursuit of the crown! Out of those 11 events, he won 3 PRO class event titles giving him enough points to beat our second place finisher Roger Burman in the “Crusher” ’70 Camaro.
A self-taught suspension guru and manufacturer, MacGregor has been building hot rods, trucks and suspension components for over 30 year under his No-Limit Engineering brand. His low-flying all red C-10 features his No-Limit “Wide Ride” IFS with a modified torque arm rear setup. The addition of Ridetech triple adjustable coilovers, Wilwood brakes, Intro “Wide 5” one-off wheels with Falken tires
Gave him the needed grip to claim his first Goodguys Championship crown. Under the hood (the same one that blew off in Del Mar) lies a grumpy LS3 linked to a Tremec TKO 5-speed equipped with a Hurst Shifter.
“This is one of the highlights of my 30 year racing and hot rodding career” he said of his Championship. “Goodguys AutoCross is awesome because it’s totally grass roots while also allowing us to showcase our suspension products. Anyone can come out and race and it sure beats sitting in a lawn chair” he said with a smile.
He plans on “refining” his wicked-fast truck next year and defending his title. His wife Tina will also get to play on-track next year behind the wheel of a shop-built ’65 Mustang.
Hot Rod Class
In the Hot Rod Division of Goodguys AutoCross, it was Indiana’s Bret Voelkel and his sinister-looking ’33 Ford winning and defending his title as season Champion. Voelkel was a fixture at Goodguys AutoCross events around the Midwest region and out west this season. He raced at 7 events in 2013, always finishing near the top, earning him enough class points for the title. He was PRO class and Hot Rod class champion in 2012 so this season’s popular Hot Rod division win extends his streak to two back-to-back Goodguys AutoCross Championships.
Voelkel’s 2400 pound 630 HP beast is powered by a 427 cubic inch small block Ford, built by Sunset Racecraft (Lubbock, TX) with a Dart aluminum block and Brodix Neal cylinder heads. Underneath the Factory-Five ’33 Ford skin you’ll find RideTech triple adjustable coilovers and a whole slew of other top shelf components and custom RideTech goodies. The car is fitted with 18×12 Forgeline CF3C Concave wheels with Matte Bronze centers and Satin Black inners and outers at all four corners as well as Baer brakes. Bret runs 315/30R18 Falken Azenis tires on the ’33 Ford.
Street Machine Class:
Roger “Pop-a-Wheelie” Burman of Iowa won his first-ever Goodguys AutoCross class championship this season (Street Machine Class) behind the wheel of Dave & Karen Leisinger’s “Crusher” ’70 Camaro. Flying the Summit Racing colors into battle, Burman won 3 event titles this year, racing at a total of 8 Goodguys national events during the spring, summer and fall.
A former national motocross champion, Burman may be best known for building award-winning hot rods and muscle cars but his on-track prowess in drag racing (Goodguys Indy Street Rod Shootout Winner) and now AutoCross sets him apart from the competition.
The “Crusher” ’70 Camaro was built specifically for AutoCrossing. Under the hood is a wicked, Warren Johnson-built 800hp V8 mill set back some 6 inches. Burman’s crew at his Lakeside Rods & Rides shop welded together their own custom frame and mated it with a Detroit Speed & Engineering hydroformed subframe at the front and QUADRALink rear system out back. The car runs fast on Ridetech coilovers. The ominous Boze Mesh wheels measure 18×12 on all four corners. Providing that all-important grip is a set of Falken Azenis tires (315/30R18 front and rear). It stops on a dime courtesy of a Baer big brake kit.
