Barry and Irene Jason won their class in the Great Race for the 3rd consecutive year last weekend, driving their red 1966 Mustang to the win at the event’s final stop in The Villages, Florida. The nine-day, 12-state endurance race covered 2,400 miles in all.
The feat was historic in several ways. The Jason’s became the first team to win class in three consecutive years but perhaps more importantly, became the first team to ever win the4 historic rally in a post-war car.
According to Hemmings Motor News, one reason a postwar car hasn’t won the Great Race is the handicap factoring that rewards drivers of older cars. Despite that, the Texas couple two-stepped their way to the win and it couldn’t have come during a better year – the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang!
