Record 4th of July Friday crowds, a full weather spectrum, fireworks, patriotism and well over 4,000 cars highlighted the Goodguys 23rd Heartland Nationals last weekend in Des Moines! If you ever want a reminder course on how to be a proud American, come check out the Goodguys Heartland Nationals. It will fill your heart with pride!
Grand Avenue, the main thoroughfare running through the middle of the Iowa State Fairgrounds was its usual spectacle – even more so on July 4th. Between show cars parked on the edges of the street and the non-stop cruising down the middle, it was literally of sea of cars and people all three days. There’s no better photo opportunity in the world if you’re a car guy or gal!
The Goodguys AutoCross pits were also extremely busy all three days. Full fields in all 5 classes provided non-stop engine revs, tire chirps and enthusiastic applause. Mike DuSold, driving his ’67 Camaro, blistered the track with an event-best 45.568 lap in PRO. Tom Farrington drove his ’66 Chevelle to a big win in the Street Machine Class with a stout 46.602 while Justin Dermondy took his turbo-charged and totally bitchin ’46 Ford coupe to a 50.848 lap to win Hot Rod. Rounding out the big weekend winners were Brandon Clemens in his ’57 Chevy pickup (Truck class 46.799) and Trevor Jones in his 2014 Ford Focus ST (AA Sunday class 46.952).

One of the continuing trends here in Des Moines the last decade or so is the quality of the cars. Incredible, show-winning iron in all genres is featured here, making Builder’s Choice awards selector Roger Burman’s job nearly impossible to find the best of the best. But like he always does, Roger picked a perfect 10-pack of beauties representing 7 states! With the full menu of Goodguys awards here in Des Moines, over 120 show cars filled Sunday’s winner’s circle. It was like a who’s who in there!

Swap Meet director Jeff Johnson had his hands more than full. Come Friday afternoon, he had to make a SOLD OUT sign. That was it. There was simply no more room! Hundreds upon hundreds of sellers offered an incredible array of collectible parts, cars and automotive memorabilia.
In addition to all of that excitement, two big nights of fireworks, an incredible weekend of music from Rick K and the Allnighters and rockin’ hotel parties made it one for the ages.
Thanks a TON Des Moines! Y’all know how to party! We’ll see you again next year July 3, 4 & 5 for the 24th edition of the Goodguys Heartland Nationals – again on the holiday weekend! Be there!
