Danny Popp did it again! Driving his ’72 Corvette representing JRi Shocks, last year’s Goodguys AutoCrosser of the Year won today’s Sponsor Shootout AutoCross in Columbus. It was no cake walk.
Popp had to call on his 3-decades of racing experience to eclipse Summit Racing’s Josh Leisinger in the family’s silver ’64 Corvette. The two Vette’s staged an epic battle through 4 elimination rounds in a field of 13 cars.
Popp was masterful when it counted most. The multi-time champion in SCCA, NASA, and OUSCI competition ran back-to-back 28.140 elapsed times on the tight twisty course in both the semi-final and final. The back-to-back identical times is akin to a golfer’s hole-in-one.
Leisninger, a Goodguys AutoCross veteran at just 24, was as game as they come today. Like Popp, he mastered the clocks, running a 28.706 twice in the same event – a rarity of the highest order. He was in jeopardy however, of losing his semi-final matchup with Detroit Speed’s Kyle Tucker (who hit the second-to-last cone near the finish line, adding a one second penalty, negating his chance to advance).
In all, there were 7 sub-29 second runs logged. Those who ran 28 second times included the winner and runner up (twice each) as well as Kyle Tucker (28.964), Roadster Shop’s Larry Woo (28.870) and BF Goodrich’s Brian Finch (28.960).
For the win, Popp collected a cool five grand for JRi Shocks.
