24th West Coast Nationals Presented by Flowmaster Gets Underway This Weekend!

Long known as the “Crown Jewel” of Goodguys events, the 24th annual West Coast Nationals returns home to the Pleasanton Fairgrounds this weekend bringing over 3,000 rods, customs, classics and muscle cars from around the world! The West Coast Nationals is the largest participant automotive event in the Western United States and offers show goers the world’s finest American hot rods, customs and classics. For the first time in the event’s 23 year history, muscle cars through 1972 vintage will be welcomed setting the stage for what will be a spectacular new look and feel!

All of the event’s traditions are cherished. Starting on Monday, Hot Rod Week takes rodders on four days of guided tours in and around the Bay Area to various collections, hot rod shops, museums and other cool points of interest. Friday’s Shade Tree Social hosted by the Danville Dukes offers wieners and fellowship in the fairgrounds picnic area. A spectacular array of vendor exhibits, special parking areas, a giant Goodgals Gallery (arts & crafts), kids games, seminars, the crowning of America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod, and over one hundred other specialty awards like the Stroker McGurk, Billy B Memorial and Best Bitchin’ plus many others are offered.

Tom Medley will be honored as the “Hot Rod Hero” of this weekend’s event. Medley, the spirited cartoonist who created “Stroker McGurk” for the pages of 1950s era Hot Rod Magazine and later served as editor of Rod & Custom Magazine will be on hand Friday and Saturday in Pleasanton to hand pick this year’s Stroker award as well as the ’40 Fords Forever pick.

While at Rod & Custom, Medley was instrumental in the formation of the first ever Street Rod Nationals and is credited with being one of the founding fathers of today’s billion dollar street rodding industry. Medley, now 90, will receive an award Saturday afternoon, August 28th for his numerous contributions to the industry from his peers and former coworkers at Rod & Custom including Bud Bryan and Jim Jacobson. STREET RODDER’s Ron Ceridono will also speak.
