-Two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr has joined Speedway Motors’ AutoCross team

Goodguys AutoCross just got a lot tougher! Speedway Motors, the official Speed Shop of Goodguys has named two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr as team driver for the upcoming 2015 season. His complete appearance schedule is still shaking out but he will compete at next weekend’s season-opening Spring Nationals at Westworld of Scottsdale as well as Goodguys 33rd All American Get-Together March 28 & 29 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds to start off the year.

Unser Jr will share the seat of Speedway’s G-Comp 1965 Nova with his cousin Robby Unser, himself an eight time Pikes Peak hill climb winner and Formula D drifter. The nimble Nova is outfitted with Speedway’s new G-Comp Front Suspension Kit and a full complement of AFCO coil-over shocks. The Nova is powered by a BluePrint 454ci Pro Series small-block engine backed by a Tremec 5-Speed transmission, and features a host of aftermarket performance parts from Billet Specialties, Dynatech, MSD, ProCar and Weld Racing.

Retired from an Indy car career that spanned over 3 decades, Unser still competes at a variety of motorsport events. In 2013, he partnered with his son Al Unser III to dominate a 25-hour endurance race at Thunderhill Park. He is also a regular at the Long Beach Grand Prix Pro/Celebrity race.

Fans interested in taking a ride with Unser Jr around the  track will get their chance later this year as he will be one of the featured drivers in Goodguys AutoCross for Kids program.

-Jerry and Maureen Magnuson together at the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas

-Jerry and Maureen Magnuson together at the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas

We received very sad news this afternoon that hot rodder and aftermarket industry legend Jerry Magnuson passed away today. He was a resident of Ventura, California.

In a career that spanned numerous decades, Magnuson was an elite-level machinist, engineer, fabricator, manufacturer, and aftermarket industry legend. He was also a passionate hot rodder and a regular at Goodguys events, especially in the Western states. Many Goodguys members will remember his “Magnatude” ’32 Muroc roadster (a car he teamed with Chip Foose to build). Magnatude made it a clean sweep in 2010 winning all three major street rod awards offered by Goodguys. The roadster won the Goodguys Street Rod d’Elegance crown, Goodguys Street Rod of the Year and was named America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod. It marked the first time a car swept all three coveted Goodguys awards in the same calendar year.

He and wife Maureen’s latest business venture, TrackMaster Products, was born in 2013 as manufacturing firm specializing in his revolutionary Track T roadster and related components. Many will remember the red scalloped hand formed ’23 T roadster making its debut at the 2013 SEMA show. Jerry’s knowledge of suspension geometry and design, fabrication skills and how to design a car from scratch complete with engineering drawings helped him turn his Track T into a world-class automobile capable of exceeding the performance envelope of the most exotic cars on the planet.

His most visible body of work however, is the Magnuson Supercharger product line bearing his name that still dominates the market in power output, efficiency and durability.

Other career milestones included his revolutionary motorcycle design called the MagnaCycle, and his work with Yamaha on building the first drag bike to exceed 200mph. His engineering and fabrication knowledge was gained while building Indy Cars for Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers back in the 1960s and early 70s.

A message posted today on the Magnuson Superchargers Instagram feed read, “It is with a very heavy heart we are posting this to let you know of the passing of our founder, the legend, Jerry Magnuson. What an impact he had on the aftermarket community. Jerry will never be forgotten. He lives on in us. His passion and his dream will continue to make its mark on this industry for many, many years to come. Goodspeed.”

We will pass along any further information as we get it in the coming days…

-Mike Stowe's 1940 Ford - winner of the 2015 Steele Rubber Preservation Award

-Mike Stowe’s 1940 Ford – winner of the 2015 Steele Rubber Preservation Award

Back in 2014, our friends at Steele Rubber Products (sponsors of the Goodguys Memory Lane pick) teamed up with the Detroit Autorama to present the annual Preservation Award.  The Preservation Award is presented to a vehicle and individual that showcases the heritage of hot rodding as well as the classic car industry.  These award winners represent the ideals, character and history of the hot rod hobby.  They’re vehicles with amazing stories and journeys, and Steele is proud to help tell their stories to the world through the Preservation Award.

For 2015, the International Show Car Association (ISCA) and Steele Rubber Products selected the 1940 Ford Coupe, owned by Mike Stowe, as the latest Preservation Award winner.  Mike originally purchased the Coupe in Michigan in 1958 for $125.  Over the next several decades, he and his family would assemble and re-assemble the car.  A true “driver”, the Ford was built to be enjoyed on the open road.  But, logging hundreds of miles can take its toll on an old car.  So, the car received new paint and an overhaul in 2012 to restore it to its current show car looks.

Mike’s 1940 Ford represents years of hard work and dedication, as well as miles of enjoyment.  These are the kinds of hot rod values that Steele wants to promote with the Preservation Award.  On the outside, the car looks completely original all the way around.  Throughout the vehicle are modern improvements, including air conditioning, tilt steering, five speed transmission and even a brand new 327 Chevy 350 motor. Steele Rubber said they’re confident Mike will never stop tinkering with his old Coupe – “and that,” they say “is exactly what the Preservation Award is all about.”

AHF

Chattanooga, TN – Goodguys Rod and Custom Association and The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer have announced a partnership to raise funds and awareness for the Foundation’s mission to erase the effects of pediatric cancer for patients, survivors and their families. The partnership will provide the Foundation with opportunities to educate both children and adults about healthy lifestyles that prevent cancer, as well as provide much-needed therapies, in a variety of cities throughout the United States.

Goodguys will work in conjunction with the Foundation at several Goodguys shows during 2015. Association members and show attendees will have opportunities to contribute to the effort through donations, the purchase of limited edition merchandise, and participation in the “AutoCross for Kids”, as well as through volunteering for some of the program’s initiatives.

The AutoCross for Kids will offer Goodguys car show attendees opportunities at selected shows a chance to ride with Pro AutoCross competitors on a specially-prepared closed performance AutoCross course in exchange for a specified donation to the Austin Hatcher Foundation. The AutoCross for Kids promotion will be held on Fridays and Sundays at select events.

During each event weekend, the Foundation also will partner with a local hospital to bring its innovative Diversionary Therapy program to children and families in the pediatric oncology units. The program is designed to help patients, survivors and their families enjoy leisure time by building and racing the Foundation’s pinewood derby cars, in the process offering a simple but effective diversion from the challenges presented by pediatric cancer. Goodguys will enhance the program by inviting members of the local hot rod community to participate and display collectable cars.

“We are overwhelmed at the support Goodguys has already demonstrated and continues to provide the foundation,” Austin Hatcher Foundation President Amy Jo Osborn said. “They have offered up these amazing events, and continue to look for new ways to help. They have really rallied to support our cause.”

“Goodguys events are family events,” said Marc Meadors, President, Goodguys Rod & Custom Association.  “The hot rod/car community is a huge family and bringing the Austin Hatcher Foundation into the fold is a win-win for everyone.  We hope to do great things for them this year through the AutoCross for Kids promotion in raising and awareness and funds in the fight against pediatric cancer.”

The partnership will kick off at the Goodguys 1st North Carolina Nationals on April 17-19 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, N.C. Attendees should seek out the Austin Hatcher Foundation’s Hatch’s Garage Diversionary Therapy Chevy Silverado, donated and customized by Chevrolet Performance and Mobil 1, and check the event schedule for special activities and times of the AutoCross for Kids.

-Mike and JoAnn Walker’s ‘VWRX” Volkswagen custom van will debut at the 15th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals April 10-12

Divers Street Rods in tiny Startup, Washington has been known for big things over the years. Led by Tim Divers, he and his craftsmen have built Ridler winners, Goodguys award winners and can always be relied upon to come up with something completely out of the box on occasion.

Their latest project, Mike and JoAnn Walker’s vibrant green 1972 VW bus has been turning heads in import circles. Powered by a turbocharged 400 horsepower Subaru WRX flat four engine, the “VWRX” combines Japanese performance with an iconic 1970s era hippie van, and lots of good old fashioned American hot rod techniques! In addition to the motor, the rear suspension was taken from the WRX donor car while the front suspension is Mustang II with an Art Morrison clip. It rolls on Rota G-Force 18×8.5 wheels shod in Pirelli P-Zero rubber.

The steel body has been heavily massaged with sucked in bumpers, custom grille treatment, flush fit glass and a roll back top. The brilliant green is a custom House of Kolor mix. Inside the cabin you’ll find a Subaru STI dash as well as a full custom interior by Divers.

The best news? VWRX will make its official debut at the Goodguys 15th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals April 10-12! It will be featured inside the Pat O’Brien Hall throughout the weekend.

Don’t miss this way cool custom van!

-Goodguys Founder & Chairman Gary Meadors visited Bob's garage in Chino last year.

-Goodguys Founder & Chairman Gary Meadors visited Bob’s garage in Chino last year.

We got word this week that Chino, California hot rodder Bob Kolmos passed away last Saturday, February 7th. He had been battling various health issues in recent years but was out and about ‘til the end.

For decades, Kolmos and his wife Sharon were fixtures in the west coast hot rodding scene, Bob driving his bright yellow Boyd Coddington-built ‘32 Ford Phaeton and Sharon in her Buttera-influenced, dark gray ’32 Ford Tudor. His Phaeton had well over 85,000 road miles, lookin’ cool each and every time it went out for a drive. They were both regular participants at Goodguys events in Southern California dating back to our first Spring Nationals at Pomona in 1990.

Originally from Wisconsin, Kolmos followed his childhood friend John Buttera to California where they both flourished in the 1970s street rod scene. Bob worked as general sales manager at Richard Hibbard Chevrolet in Claremont bringing a hot rod flare to the giant Chevy dealership (which at one point in time was the nation’s leading dealer of Corvettes). Hibbard’s dealership was also a prominent player in the smoothed out truckin’ scene in the 80s and 90s, no doubt influenced heavily by Kolmos and his connection to hot rodding.

One of Bob’s signature hobbies over the years was putting together fantastic photo collages of rod runs. He had them all over the walls of his garage – thousands of photos from hot rodding’s glory years. He was also instrumental in helping to organize the 80th Anniversary of the 1932 Ford exhibit at the Grand National Roadster Show.

So long old friend. Thanks for all you did for our industry and all the great memories…

-Ridetech will build the "48 Hour Corvette" live online beginning Tuesday, March 10th

-Ridetech will build the “48 Hour Corvette” live online beginning Tuesday, March 10th

Our friends at Ridetech, builders of the Goodguys G/RS 1969 Camaro, will soon embark on another historic build only this one will take just 48 hours to complete!

On March 10th, they will once again (you may remember the 48 Camaro build back in 2011) attempt what many believe to be an impossible build. A typical eBay.com purchased 1972 Corvette will roll into the 48 Hour build center in southern Indiana to be transformed into a fully equipped track monster. The build will take place over three sixteen-hour workdays. The entire process will be captured live online via streaming video with manufacturer-specific Q & A sessions and interviews throughout. As the C3 is disassembled the parts that are not being reused will be available for purchase on eBay.

How do they plan to properly finish off a build of this nature? Take the car straight to the track after completion, that’s how! Full details about the build will be updated daily leading up to the build at www.48hourcorvette.com

Have fun guys!

-PPG Show Truck hotshoe Chad Hook - a real GOOD GUY!

-PPG Show Truck hotshoe Chad Hook – a real GOOD GUY!

PPG Automotive Refinish has announced the 2015 appearance schedule of its colorful show truck. The truck, a popular crowd-pleaser at all its tour stops, is a 75-foot 2007 Coronado Freightliner tractor-trailer rig. This year it sports a new paint scheme that highlights the vibrant colors, ingenious graphics and matchless special effects that PPG’s advanced PPG refinish products allow and encourage.

Again this year, veteran PPG driver Chad Hook will steer the truck across the country to major industry events including 8 Goodguys nationals. Chad has been driving the PPG show truck since 1999 and has never missed an event or arrived late! He will begin his annual expedition April 24 with the Goodguys 2nd Florida Nationals and move on to Nashville, Indianapolis and other destinations across the nation. He will make a total of 14 stops and end the season with the Goodguys 18th Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, Ariz., Nov. 20.

The show truck presents a great opportunity for professional and amateur custom car painters and builders to learn more about PPG products and the outstanding finishes they provide. Collector Car Appreciation Day – a day in which all owners and enthusiasts of vintage American cars can take great pride in is set for Friday, July 10th. That’s also opening day of the Goodguys 18th PPG Nationals in Columbus! Please plan on joining Goodguys in Columbus as we proudly take part in the largest gathering of collector cars, hot rods, customs, trucks and muscle cars in the country on that specific day!

Now in its 6th year, Collector Car Appreciation Day is an annual one-day celebration to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. Back in 2009, The U.S. Senate helped launch Collector Car Appreciation Day by passing Resolutions each year at the Sema Action Network’s request. The previous resolutions were sponsored by Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). Senators Tester and Burr have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, D.C., and recognize the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for the automobile’s unique historical place in our history.

Larry Olson’s flaming black 1933 Ford Roadster took home America’s Most Beautiful Roadster honors at last weekend’s 66th annual Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, CA.

Built by Bobby Alloway, Olson’s righteous roadster is a rolling perfection. Its sleek stance was enhanced by stretching it two-inches. In typical Alloway fashion, the fit & finish is impeccable with perfect gaps, spot-on ride height and laser smooth lines.

Body mods include sedan doors, a narrowed hood, laid back windshield, and lots of sweet subtleties.  A heavily plated and polished 241ci Red Ram Dodge Hemi with 6-Strombergs appears to deliver the fuel but EFI is neatly tucked away in the cylinder heads. A T-5 transmission, V8 quick change, and a Model A axle complete the drivetrain. Wheels are all Alloway’s  – highly polished bigs and littles!

Inside the cabin is an old school black leather interior.

Congratulations to owner Larry Olson and builder Bobby Alloway! Hope to see the car at Indy June 5-7 for the Goodguys 2015 Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year competition!

The 66th annual Grand National Roadster Show kicks off tomorrow at Fairplex in Pomona but the competition for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster is already well underway. Starting yesterday, all AMBR contenders were driven on to the judges stand to be scrutinized, looked over and judged.

With 18 AMBR entrants gunning for the oldest trophy in hot rodding, this year’s field is deep and contentious. Several home builders have entries going up against the likes of Bobby Alloway, Pinkee’s Rod Shop, Charley’s Garage, Hollywood Hot Rods and other noted super shops.

Hot Rod’s Thom Taylor, a long time industry friend and all around Goodguy, was on the show floor yesterday and put together a nice preview of all the entrants which can be viewed here. Check back Monday and we’ll have the winner for ya!

-Goodguys All American Sunday welcomes late model American muslce

-Goodguys All American Sunday welcomes late model American muslce

For four years running, Goodguys All American Sunday has celebrated late model American Muscle on Sundays at Goodguys National Events. New generations as well as hot rodders of all ages have brought out post-1972 cars to shine up their rides, show them with pride, take in the events, shop the midway and swap meet and race through the cones at Goodguys AutoCross. As we approach the 2015 event season, we’re happy to report All American Sunday is trending upward.

Five to as many as fifteen percent increases in late model participation has occurred these past two years. To accommodate late models, Goodguys has expanded the format to not only include the cars in our events, we’ve created a special parking area known as Modern Machines. Entrants to this special parking area receive a commemorative dash plaque, special window display card and a chance at Goodguys awards. While some late model owners like to park among the general show population, the Modern Machine area tends to put a spotlight on these alluring late models.

As far as AutoCrossing goes, the All American Sunday class is run tirelessly, giving newbies a chance to practice and hone their skills. The fastest late model on Sunday not only receives a trophy and bragging rights, he or she gets to drive through the Sunday awards ceremony as the big winner!

If you or perhaps your club is interested in checking out Goodguys All American Sunday, you’ll be delighted to know it’s featured at 11 events this year, you can register online and you’ll get $10 off! For more, click here.

-The 640hp 2016 Cadillac CTS-V

-The 640hp 2016 Cadillac CTS-V

There has to be a few serious hot rodders on the board at Cadillac these days. As if the 556hp version of the 2nd gen CTS-V wasn’t enough, they recently unveiled the all-new 640-hp, supercharged 6.2-liter LT4-powered 2016 CTS-V – the third generation of Caddy’s super sedan. Not only does it pound the ground, it will get 630 lb-ft of twisty torque to go along with that power, good for a Ferrari-like 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds.

“This is the maximum Cadillac V-series,” said David Caldwell, Cadillac spokesperson. The new sedan features GM’s Magnetic Ride Control with settings for tour, sport and track, which also adjusts the throttle, shifting and steering. For those who like the small details, Brembo calipers will be offered in three colors while the 19-inch, 10-spoke wheels will be wrapped in Summer Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

The car’s interior is a racy blend of carbon fiber and Alcantra offered in a variety of colors. The total package is not only impressive, it could hit 200mph with a little tuning. If you’re looking for a new daily driver, they should be at dealerships this summer. Click here to read Motor Trend’s early review of the beast

-The late Tom Medley and his trusty 1940 Ford -lovingly rebuilt after a fire by Hot Rods & Custom Stuff. Tom was a die hard '40 Ford and would want you to come out and have fun in yours! 40 Fords Forever!

-The late Tom Medley and his trusty 1940 Ford -lovingly rebuilt after a fire by Hot Rods & Custom Stuff. Tom was a die hard ’40 Ford guy and would want you to come out and have fun in yours! 40 Fords Forever!

To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the 1940 Ford, Goodguys is proud to announce a special 40 Fords Forever celebration this season. Owners of 1940 Fords are encouraged to park in this all-new special parking area on Saturday’s from 7am-noon at all 18 Goodguys National events.

Participants will not only be part of a spectacular exhibit highlighting one of history’s most popular hot rods, but will also receive a limited-edition commemorative dash plaque and a chance at winning the 40 Fords Forever pick. One 1940 Ford will be picked from each event to participate in the Sunday award ceremony and represent this special, historic vehicle.

For years, the 1940 Ford, in both coupe and sedan trim, has served as one of hot rodding’s signature cars. It’s easy to see why. It’s natural rake, flowing beltline and sloping rear deck made it hot-rod friendly. It’s one of a select few production vehicles that came from the factory needing only a lowered stance and some racy wheels to instantly transform it into a head turner!

Do you own a ’40 Ford? Know someone who does? Pass the word! Come out and join the 40 Fords Forever celebration with Goodguys!

We’ve known for years the Aussie’s make great hot rodders. Not only are they enthusiastic, they do great burnouts. Nothing gets an Aussie more fired up than a 3-minute long throttle-masher, going all the way ‘til the tires blow, which even then doesn’t stop some of them. We’ve seen breathtaking displays of raw power time and time again at the Canberra, Australia Summernats.

Now, they’ve banded together to take back the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous car burnout! On New Year’s Day at Summernats 28, 103 cars linked up to roast the weenies, creating a spectacle for the ages. They blew right past the old record of 73 cars set stateside here on Hot Rod Magazine’s Power Tour.

Crank up the speakers and check out the madness! Congrats blokes!
