We received very sad news this afternoon that hot rodder and aftermarket industry legend Jerry Magnuson passed away today. He was a resident of Ventura, California.
In a career that spanned numerous decades, Magnuson was an elite-level machinist, engineer, fabricator, manufacturer, and aftermarket industry legend. He was also a passionate hot rodder and a regular at Goodguys events, especially in the Western states. Many Goodguys members will remember his “Magnatude” ’32 Muroc roadster (a car he teamed with Chip Foose to build). Magnatude made it a clean sweep in 2010 winning all three major street rod awards offered by Goodguys. The roadster won the Goodguys Street Rod d’Elegance crown, Goodguys Street Rod of the Year and was named America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod. It marked the first time a car swept all three coveted Goodguys awards in the same calendar year.
He and wife Maureen’s latest business venture, TrackMaster Products, was born in 2013 as manufacturing firm specializing in his revolutionary Track T roadster and related components. Many will remember the red scalloped hand formed ’23 T roadster making its debut at the 2013 SEMA show. Jerry’s knowledge of suspension geometry and design, fabrication skills and how to design a car from scratch complete with engineering drawings helped him turn his Track T into a world-class automobile capable of exceeding the performance envelope of the most exotic cars on the planet.
His most visible body of work however, is the Magnuson Supercharger product line bearing his name that still dominates the market in power output, efficiency and durability.
Other career milestones included his revolutionary motorcycle design called the MagnaCycle, and his work with Yamaha on building the first drag bike to exceed 200mph. His engineering and fabrication knowledge was gained while building Indy Cars for Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers back in the 1960s and early 70s.
A message posted today on the Magnuson Superchargers Instagram feed read, “It is with a very heavy heart we are posting this to let you know of the passing of our founder, the legend, Jerry Magnuson. What an impact he had on the aftermarket community. Jerry will never be forgotten. He lives on in us. His passion and his dream will continue to make its mark on this industry for many, many years to come. Goodspeed.”
We will pass along any further information as we get it in the coming days…
