The highly modified 1966 Corvair of Cumming, Georgia’s JB Granger has been chosen as the national winner of Roadster Shop’s prestigious Style & Engineering award. In all, a total of 31 award finalists were selected over a two-year span at Goodguys Rod & Custom Association events, seeking Pro-Touring cars that embodied Roadster Shop’s vision of style, performance, and elite engineering.
Granger’s Corvair embodies all of that and more. Aptly named “FnNader” as a middle finger to consumer advocate Ralph Nader and his 1960s civil war against the maligned model, Granger teamed with the crew at Smokie Ingram’s Classical Gas Hot Rods & Restorations on the build.
FnNader is one of the most unique performance automotive builds ever attempted. Its custom chassis features Corvette C5 suspension fore and aft along with other quality speed parts including JRi shocks, PAC springs, Fab-Worx bumpstops and more. The crew kept the rearward engine bay intact but replaced the factory flat-six boxer engine with a potent, 400 horsepower LS2 V8. California’s Mendeola Powertrain built the beefed up 5-speed trans. The brakes are from Baer while the wheels are Forgeline DE3P 18×9 and 18×12 inches respectively.
Inside the cabin, the interior was gutted, the seats replaced with leather covered PROCAR race buckets, performance pedals, and other racy appointments. Equal parts race and show, FnNader’s smoothed exterior features a hand-fabricated and vented hood, deck lid, aluminum wheel wells, perfect gaps, and arresting metallic red paint along with a classic black GM front “Bumble Bee” Camaro RS stripe.
The radical Pro-Touring machine, originally built to compete in Speed Channel’s now-defunct “Are you Faster than a Redneck” show, has been campaigned in road racing events and Goodguys AutoCross competitions since 2015. Roadster Shop principles Phil and Jeremy Gerber were blown away by Granger’s killer Corvair. “While definitely an unusual car, the Corvair really stood out with the level of engineering that went into the suspension design and mid mounted LS engine, “said Phil Gerber. “The car captures everything that we were looking for. It is outside the box, has a trendsetting style, and it’s an extremely well-engineered well-executed build. The Corvair handles great on the autocross course and more importantly it looks cool doing it!”
Along with being hailed as the national winner of the coveted Style & Engineering Award, Granger will be awarded a brand new Roadster Shop Chassis from their REVO, FAST TRACK or SPEC SERIES line.
