When the fogbank of smoke cleared, Team Speedway driver Robby Unser emerged from the tire smoke as the Goodguys 2017 F.A.S.T. AutoCrosser of the Year winning the 32-car Duel in the Desert here at the 20th Southwest Nationals. Driving the radical Team Speedway ’68 Camaro, Unser defeated Mike Maier in the Mike Maier Inc ’72 Corvette. The winning time of 41.222 was Unser’s slowest of the day but that was by design. In the money round, Maier’s cone-kicking 43.584 spelled his demise. Knowing he could be conservative on his winning lap, Unser made a deliberate run, carefully running the Camaro through its paces to insure his first-ever Goodguys AutoCrosser of the Year title.
“To beat a 32-car field of this caliber isn’t easy,” said Unser – a nine time Pike’s Peak Hill Climb winner and son of Indy 500 legend Bobby Unser. “The Team Speedway team thrashed all year long on this car to get it dialed in. This event is so close and so competitive we were fortunate to come out on top today.”
For the big win, Unser received a $3,000 winner’s check and a custom toolbox from Snap-on as well as a special set of Racedeck flooring.
Congratulations to the entire Team Speedway camp!
