The Goodguys 36th All American Get-Together was an exercise in patience and persistence. The hearty Goodguys gang prevailed though as periodic showers did nothing to dampen the spirits of Goodguys’ longest-running event, which also serves as the Northern California kickoff to show season. It was 1983 the late Gary Meadors said “Let’s get our car buddies together down at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds.” The format was simple, invite everyone with an American car regardless of year, make or model and let it rip. Almost 500 cars showed up that day and it’s been a Northern California tradition for three and a half decades.
Headlining the weekend was the competition for Goodguys 2018 Street Rod Headquarters Custom of the Year. With a building full of lead sleds from all over the United States, it was Bruce and Cheryl Conwell’s “Wickcad” 1949 Cadillac by Chris Carlson which came out on top, winning the first Goodguys Top 12 award of the new season.
Kevin Anderson’s ’47 Cadillac, Cliff Mattis’ ’41 Buick, Mike Garner’s ’50 Mercury, and Chuck Mayo’s ’62 Coupe DeVille were other finalists for the prestigious award. In winning, the Conwell’s joined an elite fraternity of the custom car world’s biggest names like Dore, Zocchi, D’Agostino, and a laundry list of others.
Another building hosted the Deadend Magazine Lowrider exhibit while custom motorcycles and radical Harley’s from the Arlen Ness collection impressed the two-wheeled crowd. Of course the vendor midway, indoor booths and the expansive swap meet gave speed shoppers plenty to do.
Exercising the most patience during the weekends was the AutoCross racers. It took until 3pm Saturday before the track finally dried out enough for competition. With most of Saturday’s competition washed away, the racers were champing at the bit to get out there Sunday. To their delight, the pavement stayed dry all day. It was a wide open dash to the finish! Winners included Scott Fraser (PRO and Shootout), David Carroll (Street Machine).
After a break for Easter, the Goodguys tour heads south to beautiful San Diego for the 18th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals April 6-8 at the beautiful Del Mar Fairgrounds. Bring on the beach!
