Though the calendar says the summer solstice doesn’t officially begin until June 21st, gearheads and throttle stompers around the West kicked off their hot rod summer last weekend in style at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. The 24th Summer Get-Together was an experience in sound, speed, and fury.
Hot cars? Check. Great racing? Check. Muscle Cars and special events? Check check! Amazing weather – you betcha! As over 2,500 hot cars and trick trucks filled the fairgrounds, the summer sun shines brightly both days bringing out more cool machines that this event has ever seen. The joint was jumpin’ with hot rods, muscle machines, cruisers, classics and tricked out trucks. The action was as hot as the beer was cold. Summer never looked better!
In celebration of the Chevy Camaro 50th Anniversary – a Camaro-only exhibit was staged inside the spacious Young California Building featuring over 50 Camaros from all five generations of the popular muscle car. While the indoor action was spectacular including the Cruiser Rama bicycle exhibit, the outdoor action was hot as a firecracker.
Consider all this action. On the blacktop, we had the West Coast Muscle Car Shootout AutoCross presented by Fuel Curve. Featuring a giant field of PRO racers in their menacing machines, it was a single elimination tournament and a fight to the finish. Local hero Mike Maier won the day and the $1,000 cash prize, prize by holding off Brian Hobart. The top four finishers also receive gift certificates from Optima, BFG, Summit Racing, Autometer, Speedway, CPP and transfer to the dual in the desert this fall in Scottsdale On top of that, the first-ever Goodguys Burnout competition featured raucous rowdies burning their tires to the chords. Kurt Hill won with his radical 1954 Chevrolet from Pleasant Hill, CA. He was crowned the champ by crowd applause and didn’t disappoint! We also had the Tri-Valley Quarter Midgets running in circles as the kids did their best Dale Earnhardt Junior impressions!
Awards-wise, the weekend had a full roster. Finalists were chosen for Goodguys 2017 MSD Muscle Car of the Year and Goodguys 2017 Griot’s Garage Muscle Machine of the Year. Ron Roach’s pristine ’69 Camaro bagged the Muscle Car finalist honors while Robert Dalton’s radical “Tomahawk” ’67 Mustang by Lucky 7 Speed Shop took home Muscle Machine honors. These big winners will be added to the season’s other finalists – the winner to be determined this fall.
Throw in the giant swap meet & cars 4 sale corral, the live music, the vendor midways and exhibit booths as well as kids fun and you get a sense of what a sizzler it was. Summer couldn’t have looked better!
We’ll see ya back here in Pleasanton August 25-27 for the 31st annual West Coast Nationals presented by Flowmaster!
